A thrilling encounter between Southampton and Watford ended with a narrow victory for the Saints, thanks to a debut goal from their new signing, Cyle Larin. But this match had its fair share of controversies and dramatic moments that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
The game started with a heart-stopping moment for the Saints as their goalkeeper, Daniel Petetz, almost gifted Watford an early goal. Petetz's pass went straight to Watford's Edo Kayembe, but thankfully, Kayembe's shot lacked power, allowing the Saints to breathe a sigh of relief.
As the first half progressed, Southampton created their best chance around the 20-minute mark. Flynn Downes delivered a precise cross from the right, finding Ross Stewart in a central position. Stewart's shot, however, was saved by Watford's keeper, Egil Selvik, keeping the scores level.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Just before the half-hour mark, there was a nasty collision between Flynn Downes and James Abankwah. Downes seemed to bear the brunt of the impact and spent a considerable amount of time on the ground, receiving treatment. Despite his efforts to continue, he was eventually substituted before halftime.
In the second half, Watford fans were calling for a red card as Taylor Harwood-Bellis brought down Mamadou Doumbia, who appeared to have a clear run behind the defense. However, the referee, Elliot Bell, only produced a yellow card for the defender, much to the dismay of the Watford supporters.
And this is the part most people miss...
With the game still goalless, Saints finally broke the deadlock in dramatic fashion. James Bree delivered a perfect corner from the left, finding the head of the newly-substituted Cyle Larin. Larin powered the ball home with a powerful header, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
The Saints' supporters were quick to celebrate Larin's impact, singing his name in the moments after the goal.
But the drama wasn't over yet. In added time, Southampton were denied a penalty as Sam Edozie appeared to be wrestled to the ground inside the box. Referee Bell, however, waved away the appeals, leaving the Saints frustrated.
So, what do you think? Was the referee's decision fair? And how crucial was Cyle Larin's debut goal in securing the win for Southampton? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
