The thrilling world of horse racing witnessed a remarkable feat as Roll On Big Joe galloped to glory in a stunning display of speed and endurance. But was it a hard-fought victory or a walk in the park?
A Dominant Performance Unfolds:
The $150,000 King Cotton Stakes at Oaklawn Park on February 8th was set to be a thrilling contest with a field of nine horses. However, fate had other plans, and four scratches reduced the competition. Despite this, the show went on, and Roll On Big Joe, a gray or roan stallion, was ready to prove his mettle.
With jockey Julien Leparoux guiding him, Roll On Big Joe strategically stalked from the three lane, keeping a close eye on his rivals, Bourbon Bash and Wendelssohn, who set a swift pace of :22.4 for the opening quarter-mile. As the race unfolded, Wendelssohn took the lead at the half-mile mark, clocking an impressive :45.70.
A Late Challenger Emerges:
But the story doesn't end there. Grade 1-placed Tejano Twist, starting a bit slower, found himself seven lengths behind at the first quarter-mile. Yet, this setback seemed to ignite a fire within the Practical Joke gelding, and he began a relentless pursuit.
As the race reached its climax, Roll On Big Joe, a previous winner of the Ring The Bell Stakes at the same track, made his move. He inched forward, challenging the leaders as they entered the stretch. With a fraction of :57.64, he left his competitors in his dust.
A Thrilling Finish:
Jockey Francisco Arrieta pushed Tejano Twist hard from the four path, trying to close the gap. Despite Roll On Big Joe's commanding lead, Tejano Twist refused to give up. With a sixteenth to go, Tejano Twist passed Wendelssohn and set his sights on the leader, trailing by only half a length.
In a nail-biting finish, Roll On Big Joe, who had previously bested Tejano Twist in the Ring The Bell, demonstrated his resilience. He held off his rival to claim victory in a time of 1:09.44.
Trainer Bob Hess Jr. praised the horse's determination, attributing his slightly awkward start to a possible lack of sharpness due to a recent layoff. He emphasized the horse's 'big heart,' a testament to his fighting spirit.
Owned by a consortium of racing enthusiasts, Roll On Big Joe boasts an impressive record of 10 wins, 6 seconds, and 1 third from 23 starts, earning a career total of $841,925. Bred in Florida, his success continues to grow.
The favorite to win, Roll On Big Joe delivered on expectations, paying $3.40. Tejano Twist finished a valiant second, half a length behind, with Wendelssohn a further 1 1/2 lengths back in third.
Trainer Hess plans to give his champion a well-deserved break before targeting the prestigious $500,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn in April.
Roll On Big Joe's journey began at the 2022 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company, where Rancho Temescal secured him for $90,000. And the rest, as they say, is history.
But here's the twist: Was this victory a result of Roll On Big Joe's sheer talent, or did the reduced competition play a significant role? Could this win have been even more impressive with a full field? Share your thoughts in the comments below and join the debate!
