The Boston Red Sox's reported acquisition of All-Star Willson Contreras could halt trade talks with another star player, Ketel Marte. The Red Sox are expected to end negotiations with the Arizona Diamondbacks for Marte, as they will pay $32.5 million of Contreras' remaining $40.5 million salary over the next two seasons. This move may discourage the Red Sox from pursuing Marte, who has five years and $92 million left on his contract. The team might also hesitate to trade more young talent for the 32-year-old Contreras, who turns 34 in May. While Contreras is a significant upgrade at first base, the Red Sox's lineup would still benefit from his presence. He has consistently delivered above-average performance, as evidenced by his .257/.344/.447 batting average and 20 home runs in 563 plate appearances last season. Contreras' hard-hit percentage and barrel rate in 2025 were career-best at 48.9 and 13.8 percent, respectively. Second base remains a question mark for the Red Sox, but they have internal options. Ceddanne Rafaela and Marcelo Mayer could fill the role, and the team hopes that Kristian Campbell will make enough progress to earn the starting job this spring.
