Basant celebrations in Punjab are under strict scrutiny, with hefty penalties looming for those who dare to defy the rules. The Punjab Home Department is cracking down hard on kite flying and kite manufacturing, aiming to curb the dangers associated with the Basant festival.
A complete ban on kite flying and making remains in effect throughout Punjab. If you're caught flying a kite, you could be facing up to five years behind bars, plus a hefty fine of up to Rs2 million.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Those involved in the manufacturing, selling, or transporting kites and kite strings face even harsher penalties. They could be jailed for up to seven years and slapped with a fine of up to Rs5 million.
However, there's a small window of opportunity. The Home Department has given limited permission for Basant celebrations in Lahore, but only on February 6th, 7th, and 8th. Any kite flying outside of these specific dates and times is strictly prohibited.
And this is the part most people miss...
Officials are emphasizing that any kite flying or manufacturing outside of the permitted schedule is considered a serious threat to human lives. The law enforcement agencies are under strict orders to enforce the ban and take immediate action against anyone violating these rules.
