A bold move has been made by the US Department of Defense, as they've decided to cut ties with Harvard University, the oldest and most prestigious academic institution in the country. Hegseth accused Harvard of being a breeding ground for what he termed "hate-America activism" and a factory for "woke ideology." He went on to explain that Harvard's focus on globalist and radical ideologies does not align with the Department's core values of "lethality" and "deterrence."
But here's where it gets controversial: the Trump administration has been threatening to withdraw funding and take action against Harvard for months, claiming it promotes an anti-Semitic and "woke" agenda. Last week, President Trump even announced his intention to seek $1 billion in damages from the university, citing a report by the New York Times that his administration had to backtrack on a $200 million payment demand during negotiations.
In his video announcement, Hegseth highlighted Harvard's long-standing relationship with the US military, dating back to George Washington. He expressed disappointment that Harvard had failed to appreciate and understand the warrior class, instead returning officers who were "too Harvard-like" with their heads full of radical ideas.
The Pentagon plans to end its academic relationship with Harvard in the fall, allowing military personnel currently enrolled time to complete their studies. This decision extends beyond Harvard's teaching practices; the Department is also concerned about Harvard's research partnerships with the Chinese Communist Party. According to the New York Times, between 2010 and 2025, Harvard received $560 million in gifts and contracts from Chinese sources.
Hegseth further accused Harvard of creating a campus environment that celebrated Hamas and allowed attacks on Jews. The Trump administration has been critical of Harvard's handling of pro-Palestinian protests that occurred on various college campuses following the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
Interestingly, Hegseth himself holds a Master of Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School, which he returned in 2022 in protest of the university's critical race theory classes.
