London Luton Airport's DHL Baggage Handlers Secure Improved Pay Deal
In a significant victory for workers' rights, London Luton Airport's DHL baggage handlers have voted to accept a new pay offer, following a strike action in December. This decision comes after a tense standoff with the company, where the union, Unite, initially rejected a 4.5% pay rise, leading to a walkout by 200 employees.
The improved offer, a 5.5% pay increase, was made after 'positive talks' between DHL and the union. This deal, which will run for 18 months, includes a backdated increase to October, a substantial 25% hike in night shift premiums, and a one-time £250 payment in April 2026.
Sharon Graham, the general secretary of Unite, praised the workers' determination, stating, 'Congratulations to Luton's DHL workers who, through their demands and strike action, secured an excellent deal.'
The union had previously raised concerns about the disparity in pay between DHL workers at London Luton and those at London Gatwick Airport, where employees earn an additional £3 per hour for the same role. This new agreement aims to address this issue, ensuring fair compensation for all.
Unite's collaboration with DHL and the conciliation service Acas in reaching this offer highlights the importance of collective bargaining and the power of workers' unions in negotiating better working conditions and wages.
