LIV Golf veterans and newcomers battle for the lead
In a surprising turn of events, newcomer Thomas Detry and LIV Golf veteran Peter Uihlein are tied for the first-round lead. Detry, a new member of 4Aces GC, showcased his talent with a bogey-free round of 7 under 65. Meanwhile, Uihlein, a seasoned player from RangeGoats GC, demonstrated his experience and skill by matching Detry's score.
But here's where it gets controversial... the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) has announced that only the top 10 individual finishers will receive points, which has sparked debate among the players. Some argue that this recognition is a step in the right direction, while others feel it's unfair compared to other tours.
And this is the part most people miss... amidst the debate, Elvis Smylie, another newcomer, is making waves. At just 23 years old, Smylie joined the all-Australian Ripper GC and carded an impressive 66, putting him in solo third place.
The field also includes 10 players making their LIV Golf debut, including Byeong Hun An, the new captain of Korean Golf Club, who shot a brilliant 67. Michael La Sasso, the league's youngest player at 21, made his pro debut with a solid 69.
Torque GC currently leads the team competition, with Southern Guards GC close behind. Defending champions Legion XIII are also in the mix, sitting in solo third.
Detry and Smylie each hit an impressive 10 fairways, showcasing their accuracy off the tee. Detry also tied for the lead in greens in regulation, hitting 17 out of 18.
"First day on the job, and I must admit, I was a bit nervous," Detry shared. "But my driving was on point, making my job much easier."
Smylie, who started with a bogey on his second hole, quickly found his rhythm. He sank five birdies on par 4s, tying with new Smash GC captain Talor Gooch for the most birdies on the day.
"I think I showed what I'm capable of tonight," Smylie said. "The nerves and excitement were there, but I'm thriving in this energetic environment."
While Detry and Smylie made their LIV Golf debuts, Uihlein was making his 51st start, having played in every tournament since LIV Golf's inception in 2012. He's still searching for his first LIV Golf win, but with the format switch to 72 holes, he believes it could be his time.
"I'm not scared of a challenge," Uihlein stated. "The extra holes give me more opportunities to make up for any mistakes."
Gooch, who is lurking at 5 under, has had to adjust his mindset with the format change. He and other veteran LIV Golf players are embracing the new challenge.
"It's a different vibe," Gooch said. "But we're still focused and determined."
The expanded 57-player field includes a mix of veterans and newcomers, all eager to make an impact. With the lively tournament atmosphere and the addition of concerts and entertainment, the players are in for a unique experience.
"I'm loving the energy here in Riyadh," Smylie added. "It's a great start to my LIV Golf career."
As the tournament progresses, the debate over OWGR points continues. Some players are grateful for the recognition, while others feel there's still work to be done to ensure fair treatment.
"It's a step in the right direction," said Martin Kaymer, captain of Cleeks GC. "We should focus on the positive and keep pushing for further recognition."
