Get ready for an exciting baseball season as the Guardians aim to make history! With the lowest payroll in the MLB, they're determined to three-peat as division champions. But here's where it gets controversial... can they do it with such a tight budget?
As spring training kicks off, the Guardians are gearing up for a busy schedule. Pitchers and catchers are already reporting to camp in Goodyear, Arizona, with the first workout scheduled for February 12th. The full squad will be in action by February 17th, and the Guardians will face the Reds in their first Cactus League game shortly after.
The Guardians' journey to the top hasn't been an easy one. Despite finishing last season with an impressive 88-74 record and winning the AL Central, their offensive performance left much to be desired. They ranked near the bottom in runs scored, RBI, and batting average. However, their pitching and defense carried them to success, with a run differential that outshone other division champions.
"We need to be better offensively," said Chris Antonetti, the Guardians' president of baseball operations. "Our focus is on improving through the players we already have in the organization."
And this is the part most people miss... the Guardians' payroll for the 2026 season is a mere $83,710,000, ranking last among all MLB teams. Antonetti acknowledges that they can't compete for top free agents, but they've strategically targeted players who fit specific roles and have the flexibility to make moves during the season.
Instead of splurging on offensive upgrades, the Guardians have fortified their bullpen by signing Shawn Armstrong, Connor Brogdon, and Colin Holderman. They're also counting on young talent like Chase DeLauter, Kahlil Watson, George Valera, and others to step up and make an impact.
The Guardians' farm system, ranked fifth by The Athletic, is a source of strength and flexibility. With a deep pool of position players and pitching prospects, they have the potential to trade for more established players or restock their system.
So, can the Guardians pull off the unlikely three-peat with their limited resources? Will their young players rise to the challenge and deliver the offensive boost they need? Only time will tell.
